The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to adhere strictly to humanitarian laws in all its operations.
General Buratai made this known yesterday when the Head of Operations, African Region, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Patricia Danzi, led other members of the organization on a courtesy visit to him at the Army Headquarters.
The COAS further stated that the mandate of the Nigerian Army is to facilitate humanitarian assistance provided by the ICRC and other humanitarian agencies like NEMA, adding that he is happy with the cordial relationship existing between the Nigerian Army and the organization.
In addition, General Buratai promised that the Nigerian Army would continue to collaborate with the ICRC, and ensure adherence to international best practices as well as alleviate the sufferings of the vulnerable ones, particularly women and children.
Speaking earlier, the Head of Operations, African Region, ICRC, Patricia Danzi, congratulated the COAS on his appointment and commended the Nigerian Army’s efforts in the ongoing fight against insurgency.
She further stated that the organisation would continue to identify with the Nigerian Army, noting with satisfaction that the two institutions are working together to ensure that humanitarian laws are protected.
She also noted the bilateral relationship between the Nigerian Army and the ICRC, adding that the organization was happy with what Nigerians are doing and pledged to keep its commitment to the Nigerian people.
She reiterated the need for a continued frank and transparent relationship between the ICRC and the Nigerian Army.
Present during the visit were some Principal Staff Officers of the Army Headquarters as well as some officials of the ICRC.
