Guy Smarts: You're Doing It Wrong: Shaping Your Beard

play

How to avoid ending up with an accidental chinstrap.

So you've decided to grow a beard. You’ve got an excellent crop of stubble going, and now you need to clean up your neck. Which means it’s time for that first big decision: Where do your shave end and your beard begin?
“If your chin or your jaw isn’t really there, a beard can bring some shape to the face,” says Jessica Candia, a hairstylist at Brooklyn’s Persons of Interest barbershop. “It’s very helpful, but it can get tricky.”
If you’re tempted to shave right under your jaw line, we have some simple advice: don’t. Leaving the underside of your chin bar is a recipe for embarrassment. Actually, make that embarrassment times two.
“It’s an instant double chin,” says Candia. “You could be a string bean, and it will still give you that appearance.”
When you end your beard right at your jaw line, you’ve given yourself what we call the “accidental chinstrap.” This type of beard stayed behind in the ‘90s. And for a good reason.
When you look down at your phone, it’s like your beard has a beard—made of neck flesh. When you turn your head, your beard turns with it. When you yawn, your chin slides out of your beard and into your neck.
The problem is, you need to draw the line somewhere. Unless you’re the kind of guy whose beard magically tapers off into his neck, you’re going to require a neckline.
“If you naturally decrease under the neck already, a fade on the neck cleans it up without adding hard lines,” says Candia. “But with a lot of guys, hairier men, the chest doesn’t separate from the neck hair without shaving.”
And when you’re shaving, even the most well-intentioned neckline can raise your beard up too high. The good news is, once you know this rule of thumb, you’ll never do that again.
Take your index finger and point to your Adam’s apple. Now slide your finger up to the top of your Adam’s apple, where it meets your neck. Think of it like balancing your finger on top of that little nub of cartilage (or whatever it is).
For most guys, including facial hair chameleon Chris Daughtry, this is the natural boundary between under chin and neck.
Now it’s time to trim along this boundary. When you tip your head back, the neckline should look relatively straight, running from one corner of your jaw to the other.
“Follow the line around without rounding too much,” says Candia. “It shouldn’t be a V—there should definitely be hair on both sides of the jaw.”
Use either your standard razor or a small trimmer—the neckline requires neat work. But don’t worry. If you screw it up, it’s fixable. Give your full beard a little trim, resume shaving where the line should be, and let the boundary area grow back in.
A beard generally grows about a half an inch a month, but thanks to the contrast with your bare neck, even a couple weeks’ growth make an impact. Relax. Breathe.

But a serious problem arises when its rate increases. If not treated in time, it can lead to baldness and much more.
However, “Prevention is always better than cure.”
When you have detected hair loss in due time, you can always go for general and natural remedies to cure. Wondering what should, you do?
Find out your answer here:
Well, before moving towards knowing the solutions, take a glimpse of what can be the cause. If you don’t know the reason of a problem, you won’t be able to find a solution for it.
So, here it is –
  1. Heredity
  2. Infection
  3. Hormonal change
  4. Weak immune system
  5. Trichotillomania or hair pulling disorder
  6. Certain drugs and medications
  7. Unhealthy habits like smoking
  8. Unbalanced diet
  9. Sick hairstyles
  10. Stress and anxiety
  11. Other health problems

These are some of the causes of hair loss in both men and women. Your doctor would better diagnose other reasons. Now, let’s check out what can be the natural remedies that can help deal with hair fall at the initial stage.
General hair loss treatment medications:
  • Use Fenugreek:
Among the primary treatments for hair loss, fenugreek seeds are best to repair your hair follicles, strengthen shafts and help in the growth of hair. Apply a paste of fenugreek seeds and wash it with plain water. If done twice a week, the outcome would be highly efficient.

  • Those Onions!
Experiencing substantial hair loss? Hit the kitchen and grab those onions. This vegetable has a sulphur content that improves circulation of blood to your follicles. Grind an onion and make juice out of it. Now apply that juice on your scalp keeping it for around 30 minutes. You would need ample of water to rinse it off.
  • Licorice roots
From the herbal group, licorice roots have proved their efficiency in preventing hair damage and loss. If you have scalp irritation, roughness or even dandruff causing your tresses to shed off, take these licorice roots and soak them in milk overnight. Make a paste out of this mixture the next morning. Apply this on those bald patches at night and waste it off the following morning again.

  • Egg white
Yes! You have read that right. That egg white can reduce your hair fall problems with its vitamin and protein contents. Not only would that, but egg white also smoothens your locks making them even shinier. However, DO NOT use its yolk. Only apply that white part on your hair and scalp.
  • Hot oil massage
Often your hair fall is the reason of lack of nutrition. While eating healthy and living healthy would impact your hair, hot oil massage is the food of your tresses. This therapy can effectively control hair fall. But choose those oil rich in Vitamin E like almond oil, coconut oil, mustard oil, jojoba oil or olive oil.

In case, hair fall seems to be extreme; perhaps it’s time to take the doctor’s suggestion. Critical issues can also be taken care with hair transplantation, one of the best medical techniques to cure excessive loss of hair today. Pamper your tresses; they are precious!

Handsome Boy, Bad Breath: 4 Ways To Get Rid Of Mouth Odor!

It’s easy to improve your breath and keep your teeth and gums healthy at the same time. Try these simple steps to make your mouth feel fresh and clean.

1. Brush and floss more often.

Plaque, the sticky buildup on your teeth, collects bacteria that cause bad breath. Trapped food also adds to the problem.
Brush your teeth at least two times each day, and floss at least once. If you’re concerned about your breath, do both a little more often.
Don’t overdo things, though. If you brush too hard you can wear down your teeth, making them vulnerable to decay.

2. Rinse your mouth out.

Besides freshening your breath, a mouthwash adds extra protection by getting rid of bacteria. A fresh minty taste can make you feel good. But be sure the mouthwash you choose kills the germs that cause bad breath. Don’t just cover up the smell. Rinse daily with a good mouthwash and stop bad breath at its source.

3. Scrape your tongue.

The coating that normally forms on your tongue can be a host for smelly bacteria. To get rid of them, gently brush your tongue with your toothbrush.
If your brush is too big to comfortably reach the back of your tongue, try a scraper. “They’re designed specifically to apply even pressure across the surface of the tongue area. This removes bacteria, food debris, and dead cells that brushing alone can’t take care of,” says hygienist Pamela L. Quinones, past president of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association.

4. Avoid foods that sour your breath.

Onions and garlic are big offenders. But brushing after you eat them doesn’t help.
The substances that cause their bad smells make their way into your bloodstream and travel to your lungs, where you breathe them out, says dentist Richard Price, DMD, a spokesperson for the American Dental Association.
The best way to stop the problem? Don’t eat them, or at least avoid them before you go to work or see friends.

Wow! What To Do When You Add Too Much Salt To Your Cooking (Kitchen Hack)

Sometimes we don’t measure correctly, or we flip our wrists a little too much and drown the food in salt.
It happens to the best if us, and then we panic. Sometimes the meal ends up in the thrash can because it is simply not palatable.
Chill, we've got you covered with these simple trick that takes care of this cooking disaster:
All you need to do is wash and peel off the skin of a potato. Then cut the potato into two pieces and add to the over-salted food.
The potatoes should remain in the food for about 10 minutes after which it should have absorbed the excess salt from the food.
Alternatively, you can add a little sugar to the food. While this will not reduce the salt in the food, it will balance out the sodium.

3 Deadly Cancers Which Kill Nigerian Men Like Fowl Every Day

A good number of deadly cancers are not known to many Nigerian men. Some of these cancers do not kill in high numbers, but when someone is affected, they become a terminal disease.
A terminal disease is a disease in which if an individual contacts, he should be ready for his eventual death at any moment onward.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Nigeria has the highest rate of cancer in Africa, with the figure possibly reaching about 13 million in 2030. Every year, 10,000 Nigerians die as a result of cancer-related deaths, while 250,000 new cases of cancer are recorded annually.
The list of deadly cancers common among Nigerian men include: leukaemia (white blood cells cancers), lung, colorectal (colon), liver, prostrate, throat, among the rest. However, the three top cancers are: prostrate, liver and colon
1. Prostrate
In a research work published in Pan African Medical Journal in August 10, 2013, a study carried out in Lagos to find out the rate at which men are affected with prostrate cancer revealed there was a high prevalence of prostate cancer in the community of Lagos, which was much higher than the previously known figure.
Majority of the men examined already have advanced and high grade cancers and did not even seek for medical treatment.
In addition, there are so many men who are suffering from prostrate cancer, but are dying in silence. Prostrate cancer when it affects a man leads to a situation, whereby it could be difficult for the affected man to pass out urine or perform $exual activities.
2. Liver
Liver cancer just like all other cancers is very lethal. It kills gradually.
One big challenge of liver cancer is that it is a metastasis. That is, it is a cancer which spreads to other regions of the body, apart from where it starts. This means if a man has liver cancer, the cancer will spread to other vital organs in his body.
Liver cancer begins in the cells of the liver before it becomes a malignant tumour. Men who come up with this type of cancer hardly survive it.
3. Colorectal
Colorectal cancer is also called colon cancer.
Every year, the month of March is used to mark the colon cancer awareness month (commonly called colon cancer awareness month).
Most Nigerians are not aware of colon cancer; yet it is one of the commonest cancers, globally. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in Nigerian men (after prostate and liver cancer).
According to the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) in Nigeria, every two hours, a Nigerian is diagnosed of colon cancer.
About 80% of all Nigerians who are diagnosed of colon cancer die from it. This is sad and very unfortunate; given the fact that colon cancer is one of the cancers that is virtually 100% preventable.
The colon and rectum (in our local language are called abodi, afoanu etc). They are the last part of the digestive system. Rectum helps absorb water and salt from the food matter to form faeces or stool that then passes out from the body.
The colon is a muscular tube about five feet long while the rectum. It is the final six inches of the digestive system, where faeces is stored until it passes out of the body through the anus.
Most colon cancers develop slowly, over 10 to 15 years. It usually begins as a small non-cancerous growth, called polyp on the inner lining of the colon or rectum.
It should be noted that so many factors trigger abnormal proliferation of cells, which is known as cancer. These factors include: exposure to radiation, some food, unhealthy lifestyle, heredity, and other carcinogenic substances.

6 Reasons for Eating Healthy

Eating healthy isn’t always easy, but committing to a healthy diet can be one of the smartest decisions you ever make. Why? Not only can eating well make you look and feel better, it can also save you money on future health costs.

But even if you intend to “eat healthy,” knowing exactly what that means can be challenging. “Following a healthy diet includes choosing plenty of lean meats, eggs, vegetables, fruit, whole grain and dairy products,” says Debra Nessel, a registered dietitian with Torrance Memorial Medical Center in Torrance, California.
Eating well also means leaving out or only rarely consuming foods that are high in added sugar, saturated fat and sodium. That includes most fast food, full-calorie sodas, processed snacks like chips and crackers, and anything with more milligrams of sodium than there are calories in a serving.
If you need some help getting motivated, here are the top reasons to sneak a few more nutrient-packed foods into your diet.

1. Increase productivity

Like a car, your brain needs quality fuel to run efficiently. When it comes to your job, working more efficiently can help you earn more, since high achievers are usually first in line for promotions and raises. Nessel says her clients frequently experience increased focus shortly after improving their diets.
How much can eating healthy help? One 2012 study published by Population Health Management found that eating an unhealthy diet puts you at a 66% increased risk of productivity loss. Another study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that an unhealthy diet represented the highest risk for low productivity out of 19 possible risk factors, including lack of exercise, chronic pain and financial instability.

2. Save money on life insurance

Health insurance premiums can no longer be based on health factors, since everyone is required to have health coverage. However, life insurance is elective, and those premiums are indeed partially based on how healthy you are.
If you’re shopping for life insurance, you could be required to hand over your medical records or be subjected to a health exam so the life insurance company can assess how healthy you are. You could face double the life insurance cost in premiums or be denied for coverage altogether if you’re obese. Simply switching to a healthier diet and dropping a few pounds before you apply for a policy could significantly lower your costs.

3. Enhance mood

What you eat has an impact on your brain, including the parts that regulate mood. Although there’s no single food that acts as a proven antidepressant, maintaining stable blood sugar through regular, proper nutrition will help you feel better overall on most days. Foods rich in vitamins and minerals, such as fruits, whole grains and vegetables, have been associated with an overall lower risk of depression, as have foods rich in omega-3 fats, such as nuts, salmon and other fatty fish.
True happiness isn’t just about the absence of depression; it also includes general well-being. “I frequently hear clients rave about their increased energy, more stable moods, better sleep, decreased joint pain” and greater ability to focus their thoughts after switching to a healthier eating pattern, Nessel says.
Eating healthy can reduce stress too. When your body is in a chronic state of stress, it breaks down protein to prepare for battle, but certain foods have the ability to moderate the body’s level of cortisol, the stress hormone. Some studies have found that consuming foods with omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium may help reduce cortisol levels. Eating a protein-rich diet, including fish and dairy, can help replenish protein stores and keep cortisol levels low.

4. Regulate weight

Most people know this one, but it still deserves a place on this list since more than half of Americans are overweight or obese, and obesity contributes to nearly 1 in 5 American deaths. Even if it’s only by 5-10%, reducing your body weight can lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels and decrease the risk of Type 2 diabetes, according to the Obesity Action Coalition.
Simple healthy choices such as replacing soda with water, choosing veggies instead of chips, and ordering a side salad in place of fries not only will help you lose weight, it also can help you save money. The average obese person spends $2,741 more on health care per year than a normal-weight counterpart, according to a 2012 study in the Journal of Health Economics that looked at data from 2000-2005.

5. Be healthier

Not everybody who is thin is healthy, and not everyone who is overweight is unhealthy, but eating right can improve health for even thin people who are junk food junkies. You can think of junk food as anything that’s high in calories and low in micronutrients like vitamins and minerals. This includes potato chips, greasy foods like french fries, and soda.
If you miss out on too much of the vitamins and minerals that your body needs, you could put yourself at risk for early death. A 2014 study published in the British Medical Journal found that eating at least five servings of fruit and vegetables per day was associated with lower risk of dying from any health-related cause.

6. Live longer

The same diseases that make you feel bad and cost a lot of money may also lower your life expectancy. A diet of fruit and vegetables, in combination with exercise, was associated with extended life expectancy for women in their 70s, according to a study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
Other studies have shown similar associations between a long life and calorie restriction or consumption of a Mediterranean diet, which includes lots of fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fats from fish and olive oil. No matter how you cut it, a healthy diet can play an important role in how long you’ll live.

Tips for eating healthy

If switching to a healthy diet were easy, everyone would do it. So what should you do if you’re having a hard time choosing the right foods and sticking to a healthful eating pattern?
“Small changes over time result in big payoffs,” Nessel says. That means setting small, attainable goals each day that will translate into long-term results. Here are some of her tips:
  • Stay hydrated. This will help you reduce cravings and feel fuller.
  • Don’t skip meals. Eat at about the same time each day, if you can.
  • Get active. Just increasing activity a little bit may create a mindset to eat better too.
  • Preplan around cravings. If you always get hungry for salt at 3 p.m. or sugar after dinner, have a healthier alternative ready to go.
  • Forgive yourself when you slip up. Beating yourself up after a slip-up tends to unravel all of your goals; picking back up as though you didn’t make a misstep is a better option.
Keep in mind that good choices, like eating a healthy diet, happen one at a time. A few small changes in the right direction can help improve your life now, and they may fatten your wallet too.

List Of Items You Must Have In Your Home For Emergencies

What would you do if by 12am one night, your little child drinks some household poison like shampoo thinking its juice? Or you have just gone to toilet for the fourteenth time and you are feeling like you are about to pass out.

Of course, you will go to the hospital but before you are able to go to Hospital, do you know that your actions (or inactions) might even determine if you make it to the hospital, or if the hospital will be able to save you?

Are you prepared for any eventuality? Life-threatening situations require that you have something to use at home, just in case.

The must-have Items are:

1.Activated Charcoal- This has to be the best poison-absorbing substance known to man. (Forget Palm oil) It is sold in pharmacies everywhere and you don’t need a prescription to buy it. If your child (or you) accidentally swallows poison, you would regret not having this at home. To demonstrate how effective, it is, a professor once swallowed some poison intentionally, along with activated charcoal. The poison was in quantities that would have summarily killed him, but he was unharmed. He swallowed it to demonstrate to his colleagues how effective Activated charcoal is in absorbing poison. The professor’s name is Professor Touery.

2.ORT Sachets: You don’t want to be caught dead without this in your home. (no pun intended) If someone stools frequently as in diarrhoea etc. and the person doesn’t get two things urgently, the person might die. The two things are, hydration and electrolyte balance. When you hear someone died from diarrhoea, it usually isn’t the diarrhoea that killed the person but the loss of water and electrolytes. If the person is a child, amplify your alert times 10 because of their tender bodies. I would have said sugar and salt as an alternative but it can be cumbersome doing the mixing and getting the ratio right, so I choose this convenient, ready-mixed pack sold cheap at every pharmacy I know. Just add a litre of water and you are good to go.

3. Low dose Aspirin (75 mg): Warning- NEVER EVER GIVE ASPIRIN TO A CHILD BELOW 16 YEARS OF AGE- EVER. I will discuss the dangers in another post.

Now that we have that out of the way, this wonder-drug does erm… wonders. It is different from the aspirin widely used for pain, hence the “low-dose” name. It can be used to prevent a blood-clot; it might save your granny if you notice she’s having signs of a stroke probably caused by a blood clot. Daily use of this is said to prevent some cancers and in fact, by some, you should be taking this daily. Please talk to your doctor to know if this is for you.

4.Aloe-vera plant: This thorny plant has so many beneficial uses but the one I am recommending it for is for burns and scalds. If for example you spill hot water on your hands you can quickly go and cut its leaves, apply the gel sparingly all over the affected area and leave it. What it seemingly does is that when the burns heal, it leaves as little mark as possible and if it is just a minor scald, you might not notice anything when it heals.

5.Baking Powder: Baking powder is made of sodium bicarbonate a bit different from baking powder. It has so many uses but I will mention just the 2 that pertain to this article. 1. For ulcer. 2. For scorpion stings and bug bites.

Because of the way it interacts with acids by neutralizing it, baking soda is very good for stomach ulcers. Just drink a glass of water with 1-2 teaspoons to relieve symptoms.
To use for scorpion stings, put a paste of baking powder and water over the stung area, be it wasp, bee or scorpion stings. While most scorpion stings are not deadly, some, like the Deathstalker can be fatal. So, try and kill the scorpion and take it with you to hospital for the doctor to see.

Lassa Fever Prevention: Key Ways To Avoid The 'Rat’ Virus

One way or the other we all have heard of Lassa fever, usually called the (Rat fever) and have thought of ways to prevent it. PulseNG lists Lassa fever prevention tips for homes, public places and health workers.
What is Lassa fever?
Lassa Fever is a fever caused by the Lassa virus, a member of the arenavirus family of viruses which is predominantly found in west Africa.
Rodents (Rats) are the known vectors of the Lassa virus.
The Lassa virus is transmitted to humans via contact with food or household items contaminated with rodent urine or faeces.
It is also transmitted through contact of bodily fluids (including urine and sweat), faeces or blood with an infected person.
So far, Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and the Central African Republic are the countries with known cases of Lassa fever.

To prevent Lassa fever, avoid rats in your homes.

Health Tips: 5 Effortless Ways To Avoid Bloating

Bloating is an unfortunate health situation we cannot avoid, it just happens. It also comes at the most inconvenient times. Thus, to avoid embarrassment, here’s five effortless ways to get rid of bloating.
Lemon water
Lemon water to start the day
(purewow)

Wake up on the right side:

A glass of warm water with lemon in the morning ignites your digestive system and helps start the day on the right note. Go the extra mile by sprinkling some cinnamon or cayenne pepper for extra anti-inflammatory power.
Water

Stick to water:
No matter what you do, stick to water throughout the day. Water inhibits usual causes of bloating like constipation and dehydration and doesn’t have any stomach-expanding ingredients like sweeteners and carbonation that are available in other drinks like soda.
Milk doesn't help

No diary:
Lactose sensitivity is very important, no matter how mild. Many people see negative side effects after having milk, cheese or yogurt. You don’t need to cut them out entirely but don’t do dairy before major events, since you never really know how your body is going to react.
Avoid salt

'We Perform Surgeries With Torchlights & Lamps In University Teaching Hospital' - Doctors

Following the ongoing nationwide strike of doctors, the immediate past president of the Association of Resident Doctors, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital(UITH) branch, Dr. Oyinlola Oluwagbemiga and his successor, Dr. Ade Faponle, on Wednesday said that due to epileptic power supply in the hospital, doctors use lamps, torchlight and phone lights to treat patients. Oluwagbemiga and Faponle spoke during a media briefing in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital. According to Oluwagbemiga, “There are certain procedures we embark upon, you have to complete them using your torchlight or phone lights. Imagine that you are in an emergency where you have to resuscitate a patient and you resort to that. It is that bad. It even stretches to sanitation. We have reached the point where you are having a major procedure and all you can hear is ‘please we can only supply light for the next two hours, make sure you complete your operation.’ And there are operations that last for four or more hours. So if you have such, you have to reschedule because you have been told ab-initio that you are on your own should you embark on such.”

The Director of Administration, UITH, Mr. Ganiyu Yusuf however said the management of the hospital spent about N16m monthly on diesel and N3m monthly on electricity bill to the Ibadan Distribution Electricity Company. Yusuf said, “As management, we are not going to join issues with the resident doctors. But we are going to state the facts. It is not news that electricity generation in the country is bad. The problem affects everybody, not only the hospital. We spend N16m monthly to buy diesel. We have a 500KV generator and another 350kv generator, as well as many other smaller generators to power each unit and department. The N16m that we pay is different from the N3m that we pay to IBEDC every month. Imagine what N19m could have done, if we had steady power supply in the country. We have done what we could do as a management with the resources available. We have separate generators for many sections. If you turn on the light in the hospital because of the operations the doctors will do, we keep it running until 4pm. Even when the power is on, how many of the doctors are ready to perform surgeries? If we know that in our area power will come at a certain time, you programme your activities. We lost three people in an attempt to stabilise the power supply. One of them was electrocuted and another dropped in water. What we are trying to do is to link up with the university and take power from Ganmo. Imagine the huge cost.”

Men Face Higher Risk Of Cancers Linked To Oral Sex

Love; Credit: Vanguardngr
Men are twice as likely as women to get cancer of the mouth and throat linked to the human papillomavirus, or HPV, one of the most common sexually transmitted infections, researchers say.

For men, the risk of HPV-driven cancers of the head and neck rise along with the number of oral sex partners, researchers said Friday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting in the US capital. Nearly two out of three of these oral cancers in the United States and most western nations are caused by infection with the HPV 16 strain of the virus, and incidence of cancer is on the rise in recent years, said Gypsyamber D’Souza, who teaches epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Middle aged white men are at particularly high risk compared to other races. She said her research shows that youths are engaging in oral sex at increasingly young ages, compared to past generations. “Our research shows that for men, the number of oral sex partners — as that number increases, the risk of an oral HPV infection increases,” she told reporters. But with women, the number of sexual partners does not appear to raise the risk. “Comparing men and women with the same number of sexual partners, a man is much more likely to become infected with oral HPV than a woman.” Furthermore, women who have a greater number of vaginal sex partners appear to face a lower risk of oral HPV infection, she said. The reason may be that when women are first exposed to HPV vaginally, they mount an immune response that prevents them from getting an oral HPV infection, she said. But men do not seem to have equally robust immune responses. “Men are not only more likely to be infected with oral HPV infection than women, but our research shows that once you become infected, men are less likely to clear this infection than women, further contributing for the cancer risk.” HPV infection is quite common, and most people clear the virus within a year or two, she said. In some cases, however, HPV does not go away and can lead to cellular changes in the mouth and throat, which eventually become cancerous. Oral sex may raise the risk of head and neck cancer by 22 percent, according to a study published January in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). This type of cancer has risen 225 percent in the last two decades. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) urges HPV vaccination for all pre-teen boys and girls so they can be protected against the infection before they become sexually active.
